Marmande is a commune in the South-West of France, a sub-prefecture and the chief town of a canton in the department of Lot-et-Garonne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The town is crossed by the Garonne.
A little history
An ancient Roman castrum, Marmande entered history in 1182 with the charter granted to it by Richard Cœur de Lion, son of Aliénor d'Aquitaine. When Prince Louis, son of Philippe Auguste, took part in the crusade against the Albigensians (1219), his army joined that of the pontifical legate Arnaud Amaury before Marmande. The town was taken and, following a council during which the victors decided the fate of its inhabitants, the villagers, men, women, elderly people and children, were put to the sword. Between 1430 and 1450 a witch hunt was conducted in Marmande.
