A little history
Near Fumel lies the archaeological site of Fournol, a rock shelter that has yielded evidence of human occupation ranging from the Aurignacian to the Gravettian and the Solutrean. Human bones belonging to several individuals, bearing traces of intentional cut marks, were discovered there, leading to research into the origins of European Homo sapiens. Its history is first linked to Condat at the confluence (condate in Gaulish) of the Thèse and the Lot, then to the high surveillance point overlooking the vallée du Lot, where the château de Fumel was built. This made it an object of desire during the Hundred Years War, during which the English and the French alternately took possession of it.
