Thiers is a French commune, situated in the Puy-de-Dôme department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and is a member of the Parc naturel régional Livradois-Forez. It is one of the four sub-prefectures of the department, along with Ambert, Issoire and Riom. The inhabitants are known as the Thiernois, or indeed the Bitords.
A little history
No research or archaeological excavation work has revealed any human occupation of the Thiers region during prehistory. Nevertheless, 17 prehistoric objects are held in the collections of the Musée de la Coutellerie de Thiers. The collection comprises 3 knapped stones of the nucleus type (flint) and 14 polished stones. Some of the stones have a known provenance and date of discovery (Dorat, Orléat, Saint-Rémy sur Durolle, Chapet…) but most carry no information about the context in which they were collected.
