Tartas (pronounced [taʁtas], Tartàs, in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the département des Landes in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
A little history
From the end of the tenth century, the town was administered by the viscounts of Tartas, who succeeded one another until the beginning of the fourteenth century. Tartas passed to the house of Albret upon the death without legitimate issue of Viscount Arnaud Raimond, in 1312. The latter was at that time married to Mathe d'Albret, and her father, Amanieu VII d'Albret, took possession of the viscountcy of Tartas. However, even though he did indeed descend from the viscounts of Tartas through his grandmother Assaride de Tartas, Amanieu VII d'Albret was not the closest relative of the deceased viscount, that place in the family network being occupied by Yolande del Soler, wife of Raimond de Fronsac.
