Tarare covers 14 km², lies between 359 and 727 m above sea level and had 10,893 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Tarare is a French commune, situated in the Rhône department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The birthplace of the textile industry, the town is considered a cité de la mousseline and the capitale historique du rideau.
A little history
The town was created at the beginning of the 12th century, as the prieuré de Tarare by the abbaye de Savigny. At that time only weavers, cobblers and tanners lived there, as well as a few small traders and innkeepers. However, it appears that the De Tarare family was linked for several centuries to the life and development of the commune. In the 16th century, plagues decimated the population to the point that the consulate of Lyon ordered that a special collection would be made throughout the town to meet the needs of the poor plague-stricken people of Tarare.
