Sillé-le-Guillaume ([sije lə ɡijom]) is a French commune situated in the département de la Sarthe in the région Pays de la Loire, with a population of 2,195 inhabitants. Its residents are called Silléens. Sillé-le-Guillaume forms part of the historic province of Maine (in the Middle Ages, the comté du Maine).
A little history
In the forest, on the edge of the lake, the ruins of a fortress survive, the oppidum carolingien[pas clair]. A legend states that if a person walks through the oppidum on a full moon evening and says j'y suis three times, the lake will bubble and the Devil will appear. In the first half of the 11th century, Guillaume Ier, builder of the first fortress on this strategic point, was the founder of the maison de Sillé, a vassal of the comte du Maine. In the 1430s, during the Hundred Years War, Gilles de Rais, companion of Jeanne d'Arc and cousin of the Sillé family, came to fight the English in this region.
