La Flèche is a French commune situated in the south of the département of la Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire region. A sub-prefecture of the département, chef-lieu of the arrondissement and canton, and seat of the communauté de communes du Pays Fléchois, it has 14,947 inhabitants according to the latest census of 2023 (official population in force on 1 January 2026), making it the second most populous commune in la Sarthe. Situated on the Loir, at the heart of the Maine angevin, the commune is characterised by a very dense hydrographic network.
A little history
Human occupation of the region appears to be very ancient, as evidenced by the discovery of Neolithic tools in the commune of Cré-sur-Loir. Furthermore, the presence of a large number of megaliths in the Vallée du Loir tends to prove a very ancient and uninterrupted settlement of the pays fléchois. At the boundaries of the territory of the Cénomans (the civitas cenomanorum) and that of the Andécaves, the present-day territory of La Flèche was rural. A villa from the Gallo-Roman period, that is to say a substantial farm, was found within the territory of the commune, on the site of the present-day quartier Saint-Jacques.
