A little history
During Antiquity, a marble quarry is attested on the lands of Sablé-sur-Sarthe. This quarry, whose opening dates back to the beginning of the Gallo-Roman period, supplied the entire Cenomanian region (civitates of the Aulerci Cenomani) with blocks of calcareous stone, a marble of grey colour veined with pink and red. This type of material was used primarily for the construction of public buildings in the Sarthe. The medieval site was above all a fortress particularly well situated on the borders of Maine and Anjou.
