Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine (prononcé) is a French commune in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Manse, the ruisseau de l'Étang and various other small watercourses. The commune has a natural zone of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
A lithic industry has been attested on the communal territory since the Palaeolithic era. Excavations carried out at Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine have revealed two deposits attributed to this period, at the lieu-dit of the « Séguinière », tools dated to the Chellean, and at the site of the « Terres-Jaunes », material dated to the Mousterian. In the Neolithic period, human occupation of the communal territory is evidenced in particular by the presence of a dolmen, known as the « dolmen de Boumiers » (or « Bommiers »), a structure identified at the lieu-dit of the « Pierre Fondue », but also by the establishment of numerous other megalithic sites and deposits, all scattered across the plateau de Sainte-Maure.
