A little history
In 1667, the crew of a stricken vessel prayed to the Virgin and made a vow. They came ashore in the north of the island and erected a monument to the Virgin Marie there using the wreckage of their ship. The site would become the commune of Sainte-Marie in 1789. On the evening of 9 March 1968, a military Douglas DC-6B that had taken off from the airport of Gillot at 23h15 bound for Djibouti crashed two minutes later at the place known as Beaufond, in the Hauts de Sainte-Marie, causing the deaths of nineteen people, the twelve crew members and seven of the eight passengers, among them the Chief of the Defence Staff, général Charles Ailleret.
