A little history
From the 18th century onwards, the south of La Réunion was colonised. In 1830, the comte Gabriel Le Coat de Kerveguen settled in the area where the commune of Le Tampon would later be created, and built an empire by appropriating almost all the concessions in the south. In 1859, when the island was short of currency, he introduced his own money there, two hundred and twenty-seven thousand demonetised kreutzers he had brought back from the Austrian Empire, which he had stamped with a "K" and which would also be known locally as kervéguens. With these, he paid the Indian workforce employed on his land.
