A little history
The town of Saint-Paul de La Réunion is home to the "baie du meilleur ancrage" of the island. It was therefore through this bay that the first French people landed on the island for the first time on 29 June 1642, on the occasion of the second taking of possession of the Mascareignes by France. On 10 November 1663, the Saint-Charles anchored at Saint-Paul and the île Bourbon became, this time, a colony and the first French base in the Indian Ocean. A former capital of the island, Saint-Paul is the oldest commune on the island. In 1738, Saint-Denis became the chief town of the island at its expense.
