A little history
The bay of La Possession has been settled since 1675 by Jean Marquet (a ravine was named after him). A first concession was granted in 1699 to a Portuguese man from the Indies, Texer de Mota, who planted sugar cane over a large part of the present-day commune, stretching from the Ravine à Marquet to the Ravine à Malheur. At the Rivière des Galets, a concession was granted to Dr Rivière around 1797. In May 1831 for Ascension, Pierre Dalmond, the vicar of the parish of Saint-Paul on which it depended, presided, in an improvised chapel, over the ceremony of a First Communion of children he had prepared.
