A little history
This area between the rivière Saint-Jean and the rivière du Mât was settled as early as the mid-17th century. Indeed, the first exiles were confined to Bourbon in 1646 by monsieur Promis, governor of the Comptoir français de Fort-Dauphin, in order to curb their mutinous tendencies. Having disembarked from the Saint Laurent, they were settled in the quartier des Français, on the banks of the rivière Saint-Jean. The region of Saint-André therefore historically saw the first French people come ashore.
