During the French Revolution, Sainte-Hermine was caught up in the upheaval. A national guard was formed, but the parish priest, Alexandre Gusteau, had refused the Civil Constitution of the Clergy of 1790, as had his brother, Joseph Gusteau. This important detail suggests that the population of Sainte-Hermine was, like the overwhelming majority of the population of the Vendée in revolt, opposed to the Revolution and its hostility towards Catholicism.
