A little history
In the 5th century the commune was called Saint Vivien de Bégays. Vivien (French name) is the result of the Gallo-Roman name Vivianus. Begays is a Gascon form used to designate the « Viguier » or « Vigier », an urban magistrate, which comes from the Latin vicarius (which gave vicaire). The vicarius was in Rome a delegate of the praetorian prefect.
