Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise (Saint-Symphorin-sur-Coési [sã sa'fuːri su 'kwèzi] in Francoprovençal of the Pays lyonnais) is a French commune, situated at an altitude of 600 m in the département du Rhône in the région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The inhabitants of this village are called the Pelauds in memory of the significant tanning activity that once existed in the commune. Its position along a road axis linking the plain of Forez and the Rhône valley has given it, since the Middle Ages, a vocation as a village centre, reflected today in the importance of its service activities.

A little history

Antiquity. Saint-Symphorien was the crossroads of the Iter viennensis (the great road from Vienne to Roanne) and the first voie d'Aquitaine leaving from Fourvière to reach Auvergne in the direction of Bordeaux. At the end of the Gallo-Roman period, the Ségusiaves retreated into the Monts du Beaujolais and du Lyonnais, which had until then been practically uninhabited. When the barbarian invasions swept across the whole of Gaul, the Ségusiaves gathered at the foot of the Monts du Forez, the Bois Noirs and the Monts de la Madeleine. The Gaulish coins depicting a horned bull are often attributed to the Ségusiaves.
