Saint-Rémy-sur-Durolle is a French commune situated in the département of Puy-de-Dôme, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Rémois. This small town, formerly known as Saint-Rémy-sur-Thiers, is renowned for being the world capital of the corkscrew worm.
A little history
Several stone axes, found in the fields surrounding Saint-Rémy, attest that, from prehistory onwards, people lived in the region. Celts and Gauls subsequently settled there, probably at the foot of the quartz cliff overlooking the current village. During the Roman peace, a large estate belonging to a legionary of Caesar, possibly named Martinus, was at the origin of the hamlet of Martignat. The Romans, however, attracted by the riches of Arvernie, very quickly organised the region to make it prosperous.
