A little history
The commune was created in 1830. Its history is notably marked by the grounding of a British troop transport vessel carrying 1,262 men on board opposite the port of Saint Philippe during the night of 13 to 14 January 1897, the Warren Hastings. Due to a failure of the magnetic compass possibly caused by the neighbouring eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise, the shipwreck resulted in two deaths, the rest of the crew having waited until morning to attempt to leave the wreck. The active volcano of the Piton de la Fournaise is partly situated in the commune of Saint-Philippe.
