Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx (pronounced [sɛ̃ maʁtɛ̃ də sɛɲɑ̃s], in Gascon, Sent Martin de Senhans) is a French commune situated in the département des Landes in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The commune forms part of the aire d'attraction de Bayonne. A chef-lieu de canton, it houses the headquarters of the communauté de communes du Seignanx.
A little history
It appears that upon the arrival of the Romans, the area corresponding to the present-day département des Landes, in its southern part, was occupied by the tribe of the Tarbelles. Following the Roman occupation, the area in question would form part of the Tarbelli people, one of the nine peoples of the Novempopulanie (or Aquitania novempopulana). It appears established that the family of Saint-Martin obtained the tithe of the parish of the "Pays de Seignanx" in 745 by decision of Pope Grégoire III. This moreover constitutes a hypothesis regarding the origin of the toponym according to Léon Lafourcade.
