Saint-Maixant (Sent Maxenç, in Occitan) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of the Gironde (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Maixantais.
A little history
During the Mousterian, the site of Lavison, in the east of the commune 1.5 km north-west of the centre of Saint-Macaire, yielded lithic industry associated with a fauna including the megaloceros. During the Châtelperronian, it was occupied by hyenas and occasionally by humans. The commune takes its name from Maxentius, an abbot in the 5th century. At the Revolution, the parish of Saint-Maixant formed the commune of Saint-Maixant, with the exception of a part of the parish territory which was united with Saint-Macaire.
