Saint-Loubouer, the town

Saint-Loubouer covers 17 km², lies between 72 and 166 m above sea level and had 442 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Saint-Loubouer [sɛ̃ lubwe] is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département des Landes (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine).

A little history

Of the Celtiberian, then Romanesque and Gascon settlement known today as Saint-Loubouer, only the vast Roman camp of the Castera, situated to the north-west of the commune, survives today. The present village formed through the influx of inhabitants around a Benedictine abbey established in the 10th century, on the tip of a promontory. It consists of a single street, the present-day Grande-Rue, leading to the abbatial church. Around the 13th century, it was fortified and took on the appearance of a bastide, as were being created at that time throughout the region.
