A little history
The history of the commune is closely linked to coal extraction, which began in 1741 at la Vernade where several mines were opened. It was towards the end of the 1790s that extraction became more organised with the sinking of shafts. The town gained its status as a commune in 1789. In 1982, coal extraction came to a permanent end at Saint-Éloy-les-Mines.
