Saint-André-de-Cubzac, the town

Saint-André-de-Cubzac covers 23.2 km², lies between 2 and 73 m above sea level and had 12,626 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Saint-André-de-Cubzac (in Gascon Sant Andrieu de Cubzat) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of the Gironde, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

A little history

The commune has a number of prehistoric and protohistoric remains and several Gallo-Roman villas that bear witness to the establishment of an ancient settlement which took root in this area from the ancient period onwards. The medieval period is marked above all by the notable importance of the royal fortress of Cubzac, built in 1249 by Simon V de Montfort on the banks of the Dordogne. Its bastide plan provided for a mode of operation based principally on self-sufficiency and autarky, essential for a stronghold. However, the nearby small town of Saint-André had been endowed by the abbaye de la Sauve, as early as the end of the 12th century, with a priory.
