Rungis ([ʁœ̃.ʒis]) is a French commune situated in the département du Val-de-Marne in the Île-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Rungissois. It is particularly well known for its marché d'intérêt national, the largest fresh produce market in the world.
A little history
The village, known since 1124, has a spring whose waters are carried to Paris by the aqueducts of Arcueil and Cachan. This aqueduct succeeded the aqueduc de Lutèce from the Gallo-Roman period and the aqueduc Médicis, which was brought into service in 1623. The abbaye Sainte-Geneviève de Paris was the suzerain of Rungis from the period of Louis VI until the French Revolution. Rungis was occupied in 1815 and during the Franco-German war of 1870.
