Roye is a French commune, the chief town of the canton and the seat of the communauté de communes du Grand Roye, situated in the département de la Somme, in the région Hauts-de-France.
A little history
The presence of man on the territory of the commune of Roye is attested from the Neolithic period. There was a vicus at Rodium at the intersection of the via Agrippa de l'Océan, which linked Lugdunum (Lyon) to Gesoriacum (Boulogne-sur-Mer), and the Roman road linking Caesaromagus (Beauvais) to Bagacum Nerviorum (Bavay). Roye was at that time part of the civitas Viromanduorum, in Gallia Belgica, whose principal town was Augusta Viromanduorum (Saint-Quentin). Aerial archaeology has revealed the presence of remains of two Gallo-Roman villas situated to the west of the town, close to the motorway A 1 and the TGV Paris-Lille line.
