Roquefort, in Gascon Ròcahòrt, is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département des Landes in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. This village is a stopping point on the voie de Vézelay of the chemin de Compostelle.
A little history
It is to the vicomte de Marsan that we owe the construction, before the beginning of the 12th century, of the château de Marsan, which overlooks the confluence of the Estampon and the Douze. From the 13th century onwards, the town of Roquefort sheltered itself behind walls and formed a castelnau around its château. Benedictines settled on the site to establish a priory and built the Romanesque church Sainte-Marie. The order of the Antonins also established itself in the town, helping pilgrims to cross the rivers and the arduous region in the era of the Petites Landes.
