The name of this locality invites one to find in it an origin linked to the Gallo-Roman period. One of the most frequently put forward hypotheses is that according to which it should be seen in the Latin phrase Romanii hac Obiere et Perignum, which can be translated approximately as "the Romans perished here" (cf. the victory of the Gauls at the siege of Gergovie, as this famous place, which consecrated the victory in June 52 BC of Vercingétorix over Jules César himself at the head of his armies, lies within the communal territory). This is obviously a false learned etymology invented in the modern period and one which must be rejected definitively.
