Rocroi, formerly Rocroy, is a French commune situated in the department of the Ardennes, in the Grand Est region. Decided by King François Ier, the construction of the fortifications of Rocroy was carried out under Henri II from 1555. Rocroy is an example of an early low-profile fortification.
A little history
In 1545, François Ier asked Girolamo Marini, commissaire-général des fortifications de Champagne, to fortify the border of Champagne. He built a small fort near the village of Roulcroix. Charles Quint decided to build the fort of Charlemont, at Givet, in 1552. Henri II responded by having the enclosure of Rocroi built the same year, with its radio-concentric plan inscribed within a system of five bastions (with orillons) in a star shape.
