It is also the third commune in the département by number of inhabitants, after Saint-Étienne and Saint-Chamond.
A little history
From the early Prehistoric period (middle Palaeolithic) the area saw significant occupation, notably recorded around the sites of the gorges de la Loire. The tin route passed through the Rhône valley, which was the only supply route for ore to Mediterranean countries during the Bronze Age. Tin, coming from Armorique and Cornouailles, was transported as far as the estuary of the Loire. From there, it travelled up the river in order to reach the Rhône.
