Established in the south of the natural and historical region of Forez, at the confluence of the Furan and the Loire, Andrézieux-Bouthéon is crossed by the A72 motorway and is home to the aéroport de Saint-Étienne-Loire. The commune is part of the arrondissement de Saint-Étienne and of Saint-Étienne Métropole.

Human occupation, or at least human activity, has been continuously attested since the Neolithic period in the commune of Andrézieux-Bouthéon, notably along the banks of the river Loire, between the former ports of Andrézieux and Bouthéon. Across several sites in the Loire riverbank area of Andrézieux-Bouthéon, the presence of flint, generally flakes or blade fragments, bears witness to a human presence during the Neolithic period. Furthermore, evidence of a settlement from the early Bronze Age (around 2000 BC) was discovered at the lieu-dit Les Chaninats in Bouthéon.
