Montbrison, the town

Montbrison covers 16.3 km², lies between 370 and 552 m above sea level and had 16,123 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Montbrison (pronounced), (Montbréson in Arpitan and Occitan, Mountbrésoun in Ancient Forézien), is a French commune situated in the département of Loire in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, forming part of Loire Forez Agglomération. A historic city mentioned as early as the end of the 11th century, Montbrison is considered the historic capital of Forez, having been preceded by Feurs (the ancient Forum Segusiavorum), a city founded in order to settle the Ségusiaves after the Roman conquest. Following the decline of Feurs at the end of Antiquity, Montbrison became the capital of a feudal state, the comté de Forez, until its annexation to the royal domain in 1531.

A little history

Moingt appears in the Peutinger table under the name Aquis Segete, also known as Aquae Segetae, which must not be confused with Aquis Segeste near Sceaux-du-Gâtinais in the Loiret, another very popular Roman bathing station. This settlement extends over 15 ha occupied mainly by public buildings and comprises an imposing sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Segeta, a thermal baths complex on a plateau of the relief and a theatre on a small rise. A milestone from the 3rd century was found at Moingt, marking a stage on the voie Bolène (Reference CIL 17-02, 00317 and CIL 13, 08866).
