Montbrison (pronounced), (Montbréson in Arpitan and Occitan, Mountbrésoun in Ancient Forézien), is a French commune situated in the département of Loire in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, forming part of Loire Forez Agglomération. A historic city mentioned as early as the end of the 11th century, Montbrison is considered the historic capital of Forez, having been preceded by Feurs (the ancient Forum Segusiavorum), a city founded in order to settle the Ségusiaves after the Roman conquest. Following the decline of Feurs at the end of Antiquity, Montbrison became the capital of a feudal state, the comté de Forez, until its annexation to the royal domain in 1531.
