On 15 March 1833, the third railway line in France was brought into service between Andrézieux and Roanne (the first line on continental Europe), though it arrived at Les Varennes, on the right bank of the Loire, that is to say at Le Coteau. Le Coteau was established as a commune on 9 July 1845 by a decree of King Louis-Philippe Ier, through a split from the commune of Parigny.
