Firminy is a French commune situated in the département de la Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and belonging to the urban unit of Saint-Étienne. Its inhabitants are called the Appelous and the Appelouses.
A little history
The suffix -acum in the name Firminiacum would indicate that the place belonged, probably before the 7th century, to a man named Firmin. The first mention of Firminy (Firminiaco) appears in 971 in a charter of Conrad le Pacifique, king of Burgundy, in which the possessions recognised as belonging to the abbaye de l'Île Barbe are set out. It is therefore probable that the territory known at that time as la Celle Saint-Martin de Firminy was given to the abbey before the 10th century, at an unknown date and in unknown circumstances. In the middle of the 10th century, a church and a priory were established thanks to the generosity of the neighbouring lords.
