Richelieu, the town
Richelieu covers 5.1 km², lies between 47 and 77 m above sea level and had 1,598 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Richelieu is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. A new town built between 1631 and 1642, it bears the mark of its founder and patron, the cardinal de Richelieu, and constitutes a remarkable testament to 17th-century urbanism. An "ideal city" designed by the celebrated architect Jacques Lemercier, it is based on a grid plan modelled on Roman towns or medieval bastides.
A little history
Several material traces, brought to light during archaeological surveys, reveal that the territory of Richelieu may have been inhabited as far back as the Neolithic period. In the early Middle Ages, Richelieu proves to have been the location of a funerary site. This necropolis, dating from the Merovingian period, is situated at the lieu-dit known as the Poteau. The cemetery, comprising some thirty burials in sarcophagi or in the ground, and from which excavations have recovered a rich collection of funerary objects, remained in use until the late Middle Ages.
