Renwez [ʁɑ̃ve] is a French commune, situated in the département des Ardennes in the Grand Est region. This commune corresponds to a territory taken from the forest in the 12th century, that century of rupture and expansion of cultivable land. Beyond the "anciennes histoires de la frontière", to borrow the expression of Jules Michelet, to whom this place was very dear, the town benefited very early, in addition to agricultural and forestry activity, from activities of a pre-industrial nature, notably textiles and metallurgy.
A little history
The village of Renwez probably appeared at the end of the 12th century, within the domain of Montcornet, following land-clearing works on the forest. It was a period of change, boosted by demographic and economic growth. The forêt d'Ardenne no longer presented the impenetrable depths and gigantic expanse described by Jules César, or by Strabon. At Signy, at Élan, at Orval, abbeys were established, dividing up the ancient domain of Arduinna.
