A little history
A dolmen and several polissoirs found on the territory of the commune attest to its occupation as far back as the Neolithic period. The Hundred Years War, a conflict between the Plantagenêts and the Capétiens, which set the English against the French, took place partly in Poitou, Normandie and Aquitaine. The seigneurie of Pouzauges belonged to the Vicomtes de Thouars, who gave the château de Pouzauges its configuration. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the lords of Pouzauges came from a cadet branch of the Vicomtes de Thouars.
