A little history
The name Pontonx probably comes from the Latin pontones. A pontoon bridge built over the Adour was used to cross the river. There was also formerly a river port that handled fluvial traffic between the port of Mont-de-Marsan and the port of Bayonne. In October 1340 Bernard Ezi V d'Albret obtained from Édouard III d'Angleterre the seigneurie of Pontonx, the pays de Gosse, the Seignanx and the Auribat in exchange for the baronnie de Montendre and the bailliage de Blaye.
