Pont-du-Château is a French commune situated in the département of Puy-de-Dôme, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is part of the aire d'attraction of Clermont-Ferrand and, situated on the banks of the Allier, was for a long time the river port of the Auvergne capital. Its inhabitants, numbering 12,412 at the 2023 census, are known as the Castel-Pontins and the Castel-Pontines.
A little history
In 2006, archaeological excavations led to the discovery of Neolithic hearths. Pont-du-Château is a town with a rich historical past, it was a major centre of river trade along the Allier over the course of past centuries. It was the principal port of Clermont-Ferrand, with timber, coal, wine and Volvic stone passing through its quays. It marked the boundary between the navigable Allier (downstream by boat) and the floatable Allier (upstream, with the floating of logs downstream in the water).
