Ploërmel is a French commune situated in the département of Morbihan, in the région of Bretagne. It was created in 2019 with the status of commune nouvelle by the merging of the historic commune of Ploërmel (51 km2) with that of Monterrein (7 km2). Several remarkable megalithic monuments attest to the occupation of the communal territory during the Neolithic period (from 5,000 to 3,000 years BC). These are the allées couvertes of la Ville-Bouquet to the south-west of the communal territory and du Hino to the north-east, a dolmen situated near the hamlet of Bezon, and two menhirs located on the territory of the commune déléguée of Monterrein, the menhirs de Maison-Neuve and de Piprais. This period of prehistory is characterised by the development of agriculture (livestock farming, crops) leading to settlement, the use of polished stone, ceramics and megalithism (particularly in the region).
