Lanester [lanɛstɛʁ] is a commune in the département of Morbihan, in the south-west of the Bretagne region, in France. In 2023, with 23,752 inhabitants, it is the 3rd most populous commune in Morbihan and the 8th in Bretagne.
A little history
The site of Lanester has been occupied since the Palaeolithic. The first hamlets to develop during the Middle Ages on the site of the future town were the village of Lann er Ster (located approximately in the middle of the current rue Kesler-Devillers) and the village of Kerentrech (Kerentré), the "village of the crossing" in Breton, where a ferry allowed the crossing of the ria du Scorff. In 1741, the Duplessis-Mauduit family leased land on the left bank of the Scorff, at Kerveleur (then in the commune of Caudan), to the Compagnie des Indes. The latter had been established since 1666 on the other side of the small river, where Lorient was officially founded in 1738.
