A little history
Auray was classified by the Ministère de la Culture as a ville d'art et d'histoire until spring 2006. Auray is a place name, originating from a Breton personal name, mentioned for the first time in 1069 as Alrae, then in 1168 as Alrai, in Breton Alré[source insuffisante]. The seigneurie d'Auray was under the authority of Guingamp before passing in 1034 to the house of the dukes. In 1168, Auray was taken by the King of England Henri II.
