A little history
In the 11th century the château d'Aspremont was built, reinforced in the 13th century by a stone keep, of which only ruins remain. It was the residence of the vicomtes d'Orthe in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 13th century another keep was built on the bank of the Gaves réunis, to monitor and protect river traffic, but also to collect a toll on crossings. It was razed around 1515, then replaced by the château de Montréal.
