There are protohistoric, Gallo-Roman and Frankish presences. The first mention of Paterniaco dates from 885 (Source, MGH DD Karoli III, no. 124). Manuel Bazaille, in his article De Paterniacum à Pagny-sur-Moselle, published in September 2002 in the journal Nos Villages lorrains, provided an explanation of the origin of the oldest known name of Pagny. If one removes the Latin suffix iacum, which translates as belonging to, the remaining element patern calls to mind the Latin name Paternus, very common in the Roman period, and perhaps the surname of the founder of the villa situated on the site of the present-day cemetery on the route d'Arnaville.
