Osny, the town
Osny covers 12.5 km², lies between 27 and 102 m above sea level and had 17,954 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Osny [oni] is a commune in Val-d'Oise, in the Île-de-France region, through which the Viosne and another branch of it called « la Couleuvre » flow. Its inhabitants are known as the Osnyssois and Osnyssoises. A village in the Vexin français, the commune experienced significant demographic growth from the 1970s onwards, following its incorporation into the new town of Cergy-Pontoise, as well as rapid urbanisation.
A little history
The oldest traces of habitation in Osny are found chiefly on the lands of Immarmont, where hand axes were discovered close to one another, supporting the theory of a prehistoric settlement. Pottery as well as megaliths demonstrate the settling of prehistoric peoples in Osny. Under Roman rule, Osny benefited from its position on an important thoroughfare, the chaussée Jules César, which crossed the south-east of the village. The Roman presence encouraged the cultivation of the vine by making use of slopes facing south and east.
