Nueil-les-Aubiers is a commune in the Centre-West of France situated in the département of Deux-Sèvres, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Nueillaubrais.
A little history
The commune was created on 11 March 2001 by the straightforward merger of the communes of Les Aubiers (northern quarter) and Nueil-sur-Argent (southern quarter, known as Nueil-sous-les-Aubiers before 1964). This merger followed, in the first instance, 30 years of urbanisation, which had led to the emergence of an urban link between the two former historic villages, situated 2.25 km apart, as well as to a shared structuring of social and commercial activity. The merger was approved by the population in 1999 and implemented from March 2001. The village of Les Aubiers grew up at the crossroads of the path linking Mauléon to Thouars and the Roman road linking Nantes to Poitiers.
