Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, commonly known as Noirmoutier, is a French commune situated on the Île de Noirmoutier in the département of Vendée, in the Pays de la Loire region. A seaside holiday destination, the town offers, according to one study, one of the strongest levels of attractiveness among French towns of between one thousand and ten thousand inhabitants, alongside Arcachon, Étretat and Deauville.

A little history

In the second half of the 17th century, the island was a major centre for tobacco smuggling, in the same way as Paimbœuf. Louis XIV created in November 1674 a tobacco farm which purchased tobacco from the West Indies at low prices in order to resell it at high prices, leaving itself exposed to competition from Virginian tobacco. The imported stocks were then sold on the mainland by means of small boats known as les chattes. Until 1858, the territory of the commune covered the whole island, before its division began with the creation of the commune of Barbâtre, followed, some sixty years later, in 1919, by those of La Guérinière and L'Épine.
