Neuves-Maisons is a French commune situated in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the Grand Est region. It is known for its iron mine, which made it a bastion of French steelmaking until the end of the 1960s. Its inhabitants are called the Néodomiens.
A little history
The Benedictine priory of Saint-Vincent was founded in the 11th century, following the settlement of a household from Chaligny on the lieu-dit Villa Sancti Vincenti, between the present-day town hall and post office. "Neuves maisons" (new houses) were then built around the religious establishment, though they did not yet constitute a village community. In his "excursions épigraphiques" published in the memoirs of the Société d'archéologie lorraine in 1888, Monsieur Germain estimates that Neuves-Maisons was created shortly before 1213, but the Pouillé du diocèse de Toul drawn up in 1402 does not mention it.
