Nant, pronounced [nɑ̃t], is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Aveyron, in the Occitanie region. Before the French Revolution, the parish of Nant was part of the province of Rouergue. The inhabitants of Nant are called, like those of Nantes in Loire-Atlantique, the Nantais and Nantaises.
A little history
In the 10th century, monks drained the marshes of the Durzon valley near its confluence with the Dourbie. They created a network of stone-lined canals and developed agriculture. In 926, they built a monastery on this drained land. In 1135, the monastery was elevated to the status of abbey by Pope Innocent II. The economy and population grew.
